Understanding electrical demand can be likened to driving a car. Imagine two scenarios: in the first, a car travels at a consistent speed of 60 mph for four hours, covering 240 miles. In the second scenario, a different car travels at 80 mph for three hours, also covering 240 miles.
Both vehicles consume approximately the same amount of fuel, analogous to the total energy usage reflected on your electricity bill.
However, the first car's maximum speed is limited to 60 mph, which can be compared to the baseline kilowatt demand charge on your electric bill.
The second car, traveling at the faster speed of 80 mph, incurs a higher demand charge due to the increased kilowatt hours used.
Just as driving a car faster demands more power and causes more wear and tear on the vehicle, using multiple high energy appliances simultaneously (like a dryer, oven, electric vehicle charger, and air conditioning unit) increases the load on the electrical grid.

Your monthly bill will reflect two charges: the energy charge (the total amount of energy you consume per month) as well as the demand charge (the rate at which you use your energy, averaged over set rolling time periods). You can reduce the demand charge on your bills using smart demand control by avoiding the use of multiple large electrical appliances at the same time (e.g. water heater, clothes dryer, pool pump, HVAC) to ultimately reduce energy-usage spikes.
Many SRP customers have chosen to be on the Time-of-Use with Demand Charge Price Plan (E-27P). For higher usage customers, this is a good option with a Demand Manager resulting in a much lower SRP electric bill than on the Time-of-Use only plan (E-26).
